our mission

From the 7 Rivers Expeditions project, Kayak Portugal Tours was born. It is a project that presents Portugal and its archipelagos – the Azores and Madeira. Kayak Portugal Tours is a childhood project that harbors unique memories lived directly in contact with nature.
Our Kayak tours take us to the most emblematic places of our culture and hospitality, visiting the most special monuments and sites, savoring the best that our rich gastronomy has to offer. We believe that travelling can be used as a force for good.
Our mission is to create a feeling of gratitude for the landscapes and unique moments along the valleys of 7 different rivers in Portugal, each with immeasurable beauty, and across the sea of the Azores and Madeira islands.

The River Douro is one of our main passions, from it’s start in Spain to the release in the powerful Atlantic. We are proud of it and love sharing everything we know about it with our guests.

sergio – guide & tour leader

Sérgio Eduardo Lucena, born in Porto, starting to row boats at the age of 13 and ever since has participated in many national championships and international regattas. The river has been his travel companion for over 35 years, where he loves guiding groups along the Portuguese rivers, Madeira and Azores Islands. His passion is sharing everything related to their history, culture, nature and wildlife. Sérgio is fluent in English and Portuguese and is First Aid Certified.

isabel – guide & tour leader

Isabel Lucena, born in July 1974 and married to Sérgio Lucena, is the inspiration behind the KAYAK PORTUGAL TOURS project.

Her friendliness is contagious to everyone, she is one of our female guides and responsible for the logistics of each expedition.

She organises each tour with the utmost detail and care. She is First Aid Certified.

Marcos – International guide & tour leader

Marcos Garcia Norris has paddled around the World (England, Spain, Portugal, Guatemala, Mexico) and has his base in the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, Superior, Erie). He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 3 Coastal Kayak Instructor, ACA Kayak Rolling Endorsed Instructor, CPR / First Aid Certified and currently holds the position as ACA Regional Director for the Midwest as well as being the Illinois State Director. Marcos is a passionate kayaking trip leader ensuring that both safety and fun are present at all times in any voyage. Marcos is fluent in English and Spanish (Portuguese is on its way!)

Nuno – guide

Nuno Lucena is connected to the artistic world, but from a young age through family influence he had contact with oars and canoeing, participating in expeditions on the Douro River. The experience of years of practice and teaching make him one of our experienced guides.

  • Diogo Lucena
diogo – guide

Diogo Lucena, is connected to the health sciences where he graduated from the University of Minho. However, by familiar influence the contact with the river has always been a constant. He is the youngest of the Lucena brothers who is the guide in our expeditions.

  • Miguel Esmeriz
Miguel – guide

Miguel Esmeriz is one of our most experienced guides. As well as being our guide, he is our driver, taking our kayaks in our trailer with the utmost care. Always in a good mood and hard-working, always concerned about everyone’s well-being and safety.
