The Douro River is home to a variety of fish species. The variation changes as the river gets closer to the Atlantic and the last dam is passed.


Douro River fish include sea bass, barbel, pikeperch, and European eel. Additionally, catadromous and anadromous species, like allis shad, sea lamprey, and European eel, are also found in the Douro estuary. Mullet species, such as thinlip grey mullet and flathead grey mullet, are present in the river.
Sea Bass: Particularly common near the river’s mouth.
Barbel: A popular freshwater fish species.
Pikeperch: Also known as zander, these fish are known for their size, with some being described as “giants”.
European Eel: Found in the Douro estuary.
Allis Shad: A migratory fish species.
Sea Lamprey: Another migratory fish species found in the Douro estuary.
Mullets: Including thinlip grey mullet and flathead grey mullet.
Sea Trout: Also known as Salmo trutta, they are a migratory fish species and can be found in the Douro.
Other Species: The river also supports carp, “achigã,” “lúcio,” “perca,” “Pimpões,” among others.
