douro river islands
The Douro River today has been built as a pathway to control the flow of water and to allow cruise ships to parade gracefully from Porto to Spain and back. In exchange for that flow, there are hardly any islands left on the route. However, the two islands that do remain are beautiful spots to stop, observe and take some outstanding photographs.

During our 7 days kayaking from Spain we will encounter the islands on Day 2 and 6.
Day 2 – Ilha Deserta (the deserted island). Stuck right in the middle of the river, and with quite clear navigational aids for the cruise boats. If a cruise boat attempted to pass on the North side, they would not get very far before hitting shallow rocks…but it is perfect for kayaks. If timed correctly one can enjoy a cruise boat passing on the South side and be protected fully from any wake on the North (although we enjoy the wake!).
Ilha Deserta allows paddlers to stop and have a good look around at hidden rocks that mimic faces of people and animals. Depending on the time of day they shine more or less, but their features are evident. Imagination will quickly form different shapes!

Day 6 – Ilha dos Amores (The Island of Love). This island lies just at the entrance of the Pavia river, where its waters flow and mix with the Douro. If time allows, it is worth getting off the kayaks at the public dock and having a walk around, or a picnic.
The legend in Portugal’s Douro region tells the tragic tale of a young, poor farmer and a wealthy noblewoman who fell deeply in love despite their families’ strong objections. Forbidden from being together, the couple secretly met on the small island at the confluence of the Douro and Paiva rivers. According to local folklore, their story ended in an ultimate heartbreak, forever shrouding the island in this romantic and melancholic history.
